Biography: Attorney
Joe Diemert is a native of the Greater Cleveland area and a graduate of
Cathedral Latin High School. Mr. Diemert received his undergraduate
degree from the University of Notre Dame with honors. After graduating
from Notre Dame, Mr. Diemert attended law school at Georgetown
University while concurrently holding employment as a high school
teacher and college instructor. He also served the U.S. Department of
Justice for two years as a Community Relations Specialist. During his
time at Georgetown, Mr. Diemert’s studies focused on the areas of trial
litigation, constitutional law and municipal law.
Through the
years, Mr. Diemert has served as legal counsel for numerous political
subdivisions and officials thereof, including the City of Highland
Heights, the City of Solon, the Village of Oakwood, the Village of
Chagrin Falls, the City of Broadview Heights, the Village of Northfield,
the Village of Bentleyville and the City of Maple Heights. He has also
served as Special Counsel for the Cleveland City Council. Currently,
Mr. Diemert serves as Law Director for both the Village of Mayfield and
the City of Macedonia, as well as outside legal counsel for the Chester
Township Board of Trustees. He has been asked on multiple occasions to
make presentations to his colleagues in the legal field on developments
in the area of municipal law.
Mr. Diemert is also very
experienced in the area of public employee law through his
representation of the area’s safety force unions. His clients include
the Northern Ohio Firefighters’ Association, the Cleveland Firefighters’
union, dozens of other local firefighter unions and the State Fraternal
Order of Police. On behalf of these employees, Mr. Diemert has
presented arguments before and obtained favorable verdicts from the Ohio
Supreme Court. He has also testified before the Ohio General Assembly
on issues relating to the rights of public employees. Mr. Diemert was
instrumental in seminal public employee cases involving the Public
Employee Collective Bargaining Act, privacy rights and the recent
statewide prohibition on municipal employee residency requirements.
Additionally,
Mr. Diemert has maintained a business law and general litigation
practice in which he has represented individuals and entities of all
forms. He has consistently obtained favorable verdicts, both equitable
and monetary, including a $3.7 million dollar verdict in a tax shelter
fraud case, and several seven-figure verdicts on behalf of other
clients.
